NEBOSH (The National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health) was first established in 1979 as an independent examination and awarding body with charitable status.  NEBOSH offers a broad selection of vocational qualifications that are recognised globally.  These qualifications are designed to cater for the health and safety, risk management, and environmental needs of every workplace across the public and private sectors.

Training courses resulting in an NEBOSH qualification are very popular, attracting approximately 35,000 candidates yearly.  These courses are currently offered by over 450 training providers with examinations being taken in over 90 countries across the world.  Each of the NEBOSH qualifications is recognised by significant professional membership organisations such as the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

The examinations and assessments offered by NEBOSH are designed by a team of professional qualified staff with assistance from external examiners.  Most of these examiners are Chartered Safety and Health Practitioners actively serving within the industry, enforcement or in the public sector.

The technical standards set by NEBOSH are observed by the Qualification and Technical Council with representatives selected from national institutions.

In October 2000, NEBOSH were the first health and safety awarding body to be awarded recognition from the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual; previously known as QCA) in England, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland, and the Department of Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales.

In August 2009, NEBOSH was given Approved Awarding Body status from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in Scotland.

In addition to these awards and accreditations, NEBOSH maintains Investors in People (IIP) status and is also ISO 9001:2008 registered.

Benefits

Health and safety management within the workplace is not just a legal obligation, but also an essential moral consideration that is good for public image and business.  Qualified safety professionals provide an essential service within the workplace and are an important asset to their organisations.  The direct result of employing health and safety professionals an organisation can expect reductions in costs through the prevention of accidents and ill health of employees.

More and more large organisations are selecting NEBOSH accredited qualifications as a key part of their management or supervisors’ development strategy.  It’s important that line managers and supervisors understand the key principals of risk assessment and management so that they can build and develop a sound safety culture within the organisation.  There are many NEBOSH training providers offering in-house courses for these qualifications.  These courses can be tailored to reflect the working systems in place in the organisation or any particular hazards that may be present within a particular area or workplace.

The course and exams are in English, thus you must have a sufficient knowledge to read and write English.
