For individuals seeking to begin a new career in health and safety, there is one name that they must be fully familiar with, and that is NEBOSH.
Who is NEBOSH?
The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health or NEBOSH is an awarding body that offers an extensive range of globally recognised qualifications that effectively meet the needs of all workplaces in terms of health, safety and environmental management.
The qualifications are recognised by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), and IEMA — all the relevant professional membership bodies.
The courses that lead to NEBOSH qualifications are offered by over 600 providers and they attract about 50,000 candidates each year. The exams can be taken in over 120 countries across the globe. All examinations and assessments are set by professionally qualified staff and assisted by external examiners.
In 2014, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise was awarded to NEBOSH for its outstanding achievement in International Trade.
Qualifications and Certificates
NEBOSH certificates serve as proof of achievement that can be presented to employers, academic institutions and professional bodies.
The following are just two examples of NEBOSH’s Certificate-level qualifications, both of which provide the holders with a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff:
NEBOSH National General Certificate
This National General Certificate is the most popularly held health and safety qualification in the UK. Since its launch in 1989, over 175,000 people have obtained this award.
For many people, the NEBOSH National General Certificate is their first step in building a career in health and safety since it effectively provides a strong overview as well as a stable basis for additional professional study. This certificate is highly recommended for managers and staff from all kinds of organisations where health and safety issues must be addressed.
NEBOSH International General Certificate
The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety enables a person to gain the skills and knowledge to successfully meet their health and safety-related responsibilities, regardless of the type of organisation they work for and in any country.
The examination for this specific qualification is offered in a number of languages, such as English, Arabic, Russian, Turkish, Portuguese, Spanish and French.
This certificate was introduced in 2014; since then, more than 35,000 individuals have achieved the qualification. It is advisable for anyone aiming to progress to the NEBOSH International Diploma.
