The oil and gas industry is one of the most lucrative fields for employment. Workers in this field of business generally receive sizeable salaries and numerous benefits, while at the same time enjoying frequent travel to distant locations and intellectually stimulating work. There are also job opportunities for various skill levels — driller, welder, electrician, mechanic, engineer, manager and radio operator are just some of the job positions offered in this industry.
However, while it is true that working in the oil and gas industry does offer numerous benefits, it’s important to remember that there are also many risks that come with a job in this field. For instance, the processes of oil drilling and refining expose employees to dust and other toxic materials which may cause disease. Chemicals used in this industry may also lead to serious chemical burns and poisoning. Even personnel who are not directly involved in the mining and refining process can also suffer work-related injuries, as there is always the ever-present risk of fire and explosions, structural accidents and psychological stress from working in a distant, and often isolated, location.
Because of these risks to health and safety, it becomes imperative for businesses to prepare their employees for the rigours of a job in the oil and gas industry. The NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety aims to give workers the knowledge and techniques needed to maintain the health and safety in this particular industry.
Designed by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health, the NEBOSH Oil and Gas Course is most suitable for managers, supervisors and other personnel in leadership positions who are in charge of the welfare of other employees. Course participants should have basic knowledge and understanding of occupational health and safety; it is recommended (but not mandatory) to take a NEBOSH certificate level course such as the NEBOSH NGC prior to taking the Oil and Gas Course as this can make the course’s principles much easier to understand.
The NEBOSH Oil and Gas Certificate Course covers five topics: health, safety and environmental management in context, hydrocarbon process safety (two modules), fire protection and emergency response, and logistics and transport operations. Gaining an in-depth understanding of these subjects will help workers identify and address health and safety issues promptly, keeping the workplace safe and ultimately enhancing productivity and satisfaction of fellow workers.
Those who are interested in taking this course can receive instruction in two ways: through eLearning modules or through traditional classroom sessions. The former can be completed at your own pace while classroom learning takes five days. Each one has its own merits and should be considered carefully to accommodate schedules and needs of participants.
